Toronto

It is all about Toronto!

The long awaited holiday season comes but once a year so it’s only right that you take advantage of the festive and seasonal activities that come along with it. During the holiday season the city comes alive with displays, events, and attractions to explore that will put even the grinchiest in a joyous mood. Below are some of Toronto’s most magical events that are a must-see while visiting the city during the holidays.

Toronto Christmas Market

(close to Maple Leaf Square furnished apartments)

Is the holidays even the holidays without a visit to Toronto’s Christmas Market? This annual event turns the cobblestoned streets of Toronto’s charming distillery district into a European-style winter wonderland from November 16 to December 23. No matter your style or flavour, you’ll be able to find an array of merry treats and trinkets amongst the glittery decorated vendors, food stations, and crafts shops waiting for you to explore. Once you’ve paid Santa a visit, guests can enjoy seasonal cocktails and beers at the Christmas Market Beer Garden, before singing along to traditional Christmas carols with cheery musicians. Embrace the magical holiday celebrations for free from Tuesday to Friday or for a $6.00 admission fee on weekends.

Natrel Rink at the Harbourfront Centre

(steps from Maple Leaf Square furnished apartments and 300 Front St west suites)

It will be hard to ignore the city’s most scenic rink this holiday season at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre. Set along Lake Ontario, this rink’s inviting festive atmosphere is not to be missed either by day or by night. The Natrel Rink is open daily, offering free admission and reasonably priced skate and helmet rentals. Heated indoor change rooms make it easy and comfortable to partake in the holiday action, while the Boxcar Social rink-side restaurant offers a changing list of coffees and creative seasonal menu items to keep you warm. For a more musical experience, head down to the harbourfront for one of their Saturday DJ Skate Nights.

Christmas at Casa Loma

(close to 155Yorkville furnished rentals)

Toronto’s gothic style Casa Loma takes holiday magic to the next level during the holiday season. Celebrate 150 years of Canadian Christmas from December 2nd to January 7th on the castle grounds with a variety of jolly activities to explore. Casa Loma becomes a sight to see with festive Christmas lights twinkling throughout, and holiday decor to spark your wonder. Take a picture with the grandiose 40 foot Christmas tree in Casa Loma’s Great Hall, before basking in holiday merriment with exciting performances including illusionists and professional ice-skaters. Canadian Winterland Nights take place nightly from 5 to 9 p.m., where guests can watch holiday spectacles against the night sky.

While researching Toronto, it’s likely that you’ve heard a lot about the city’s many different neighbourhoods. Each has a unique feel, environment, and are home to multicultural communities. Today we profile specific Toronto neighbourhoods that we recommend checking out during your next stay with Mary-am Suites.

Yorkville

Enter a village of luxury, glam, and socialites. Yorkville is a prestigious Toronto district home to endless designer shops, fine dining, and celebrated bars. This intimate and small village makes it easy to get around and take in all its affluence. Whether you are there to window shop at Hazelton Lanes, sit down to a drink on the patio at Hemingway’s, or enjoy a night out like a celebrity at Amber, there’s always a range of activities to enjoy. Think you’ve seen it all? Take a walk through Yorkville’s hidden pathways that lead to even more gems, whether it be restaurants, more designer shops, or lounges.

Queen West

If you are looking for trendy fashion finds, make your next visit to Queen West. This is where you’ll find endless trendy and hip retail shops carrying all the latest fashion styles. You’ll also get fashion inspiration from passerbyers on the street. Tired of walking? Sit down with a Starbucks coffee and take in the unique styles of Torontonians. With the spring season close approaching, this is an excellent strip of the city to take in.

Little Italy

And lastly, it is well worth heading west on the TTC Bloor-Danforth subway line to get to Little Italy. In the past, Little Italy was most esteemed and recognized for its pizza and pasta. It’s also a cultured area home to many Italians. Today, the area has expanded to include martini bars, popular restaurants and is frequented by a young crowd. While visiting the area when the weather is warm, indulge at one of the area’s decadent gelato shops filled with people. We also recommend going to the Taste of Little Italy festival this June to take in the neighbourhood.

Explore these exciting neighbourhoods this spring on a weekend afternoon during your stay at Mary-am Suites furnished apartments in Toronto. Within no time, you’ll see firsthand the unique culture and distinction of Toronto’s neighbourhoods. Enjoy adventures, make new friends, or splurge on an exciting purchase. Contact Mary-am Suites if you need help finding any of these neighbourhoods.

When you visit a new city, there is plenty to see and do during your entire stay. The best place tostart is to visit the local tourist information centre, like the Union Station Tourist Information Centre in Toronto. Not only are there local specialists to answer your questions and provide information on local attractions, they also have access to free city tour guides, maps, and other pamphlets to give you more information about various attractions. In most cases, there is no charge, unless you purchase tickets to a paid-attraction, such as a museum or amusement park.

While you are at the tourist information centre, ask if there is a self-guided walking tour of the city. You would be surprised to learn in many cities there are, and even include a tour book, complete with a map and information on the sights you can see on the tour. A self-guided tour could have a nominal fee for the book and map.

How to Save Money on Sightseeing in Toronto

Another interesting way to explore a city you are visiting is to walk around to explore and people watch. Most cities have parks, beaches, markets, walking and biking trails, and other such areas you can discover, all for free. Many of these areas give you great views of the city and allow you to learn more about what is going on from the locals or looking at general information boards at upcoming events, like free concerts and festivals.

Eventually, even with the number of things you can do for free, you are going to want to visit a museum, skyscraper, or other attractions requiring a fee to access. Some cities offer combination packages where you pay one price and the ticket includes multiple attractions. This is a good way to save a little money because the cost of the combination ticket is typically less than paying separate admission fees for each attraction. In addition, flip through the tourist guides you picked up at the tourist information centre. Many of these have discount coupons for local attractions.

Another option, which many tourists are unware of, is to check and see if any of the places you want to visit have discounted or free entrance days. Some places, like museums, charge less if you visit during the week, when it tends to be less busy, or have free days or evenings, where there is no charge to see the attraction. If you are a university student, teacher, or senior citizen, you could also inquire about discounts for these people.

The best way to get around town in many cities is with an unlimited usage metro transit card with a flat rate for a specific number of days. Getting one of these cards allows you to get on and off buses and ride subways and trains in the city while you explore and sightsee. Plus, it is less expensive than paying per trip or relying on taxis.

Rather than staying in a traditional hotel room, another way to save money is with a short term rental in fully furnished condominiums since you have access to full sized kitchens, laundry, and other amenities to give you a home-away-from-home experience. Most people are surprised to learn rates are comparable to traditional hotel rooms. Feel free to contact Mary-am Suites at 1-877-7-MARYAM (1-877-762-7926) for more information about short and long term furnished condominium rentals in the Greater Toronto Area.

Contrary to popular opinion, furnished apartments aren’t your standard hotel arrangement. In fact, they offer much more than you may have in mind. The next time you’re scheduled to take an extended business trip and your boss suggests booking traditional hotel accommodations, inquire as to whether your company will cover the cost of a furnished apartment. In what follows, we detail four ways you can benefit from furnished apartments in Toronto. In turn, we hope to shed light on this ideal short- and long-term accommodation type.

1. Refrigerator in the apartment

Whether you plan on cooking during your stay or not, an apartment refrigerator allows you to always have food within easy reach. One benefit is that a refrigerator encourages healthy eating since you can cook your own meals. Moreover, keeping groceries at your place is more cost-efficient than spending money on expensive meals. You can benefit from our grocery service, which provides you with groceries stocked up in your fridge in time for your arrival. If you’d like to purchase your own food, there are many grocery stores nearby to the properties.

Toronto Furnished Apartments Benefits

2. Minimal housekeeping

There is no doubt that a clean living space leads to increased contentment and a more productive day. In comparison to other furnished suite providers who perform housekeeping once every 2 weeks, Mary-am Suites provides weekly housekeeping. Given that Mary-am Suites are quite spacious, we understand that you may have a lot of belongings to spread around. Thus, routine housekeeping ensures that your place is always tidy and spotless.

The process and time needed to get through an airport can quickly turn into an excruciating ordeal and create headaches whenever you are flying. With these tips, you can learn how to get through the airport and to your departure gate much faster and make flying more enjoyable.

Prior to Airport Arrival

Take the time to prepare before you leave home to avoid unnecessary delays. Frequently, lack of planning beforehand results in delays. Remember to follow this pre-arrival check list.

Book Connections Correctly

If you have to transfer flights, make sure you allow sufficient time to disembark the plane and arrive at the connecting gate. Ideally you should avoid short time windows in case the initial flight is delayed for some reason. Otherwise, you will miss your connection. In addition, if you are traveling with children, allow extra time for bathroom breaks. Recommended minimum between-flight connection times for domestic flights, in larger airports and international flights is 90 minutes. For smaller airports, allow at least 60 minutes.

Take Advantage of Online Features

Most airlines offer online check-in and seat selection 24 hours before the flight’s departure. Some even allow you to load your boarding pass right onto your smartphone or tablet device so there is no need to print the boarding pass. In regards to seat selections, take the time to choose wisely. It never hurts to pay a nominal fee to upgrade to a row with more leg room or choose an emergency exit row (adult travelers only) for added comfort. Avoid selecting a seat near the restroom on the plane, especially on long flights, since people will be standing in the aisle waiting to use the bathroom and you may experience unpleasant odors.

Checked and Carry-on Luggage Tips

For short trips, travel with carry-on bags only. Make sure to review the airline’s requirements for carry-on bags to avoid delays at the airport. Most airlines allow you one carry one and one personal item (i.e. purse or computer bag). Make sure all liquids, aerosols and gels are in a single clear quart zipping bag and are three ounces or less. If you intend to check luggage, verify the weight restrictions with the airline ahead of time. If you over pack, the airline will either charge you an excess luggage fee or require you to remove items at the airport to get the bag’s weight down. Additionally, pack all liquids, unless they are medications or baby formula, in your checked bags rather than your carry- on.

Dress Comfortably

Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Shoes should be easy to remove to get through security check points faster. Avoid wearing belts and other jewelry you may have to take off. If you want to take these items with you, put them in your carry-on bag until you get through security. Then you can put them on before boarding the plane.

Packing Miscellaneous Items

Medications and prescription drugs should be packed in your carry-on bag, backpack or purse. Also pack a pen in case you need one to fill out an arrival or departure card. Don’t forget snacks for the kids. You are allowed to bring dry snacks onto the plane in your carry-on, but leave the juice boxes and water bottles at home. One useful tip is to bring empty water bottles along and fill them up at a drinking fountain after getting through security.

Airport Arrival

Allow plenty of time once you arrive at the airport to park the car, unload luggage and carry-on bags, and so on. If you are traveling without children, you want to be at the airport at least 90 minutes before your flight’s scheduled departure. Some airlines will not let you board if you arrive when there is less than 30 minutes left before the actual departure. If you have children in tow and know you will need extra time, arrive two hours ahead of time. For smaller airports, times can be adjusted to 60 minutes and 90 minutes, respectively. While this might seem excessive, unexpected delays do occur and with the extra time you will be able to respond to them easier.

Keep Travel Documents Handy

Keep your passport, driver’s license and boarding pass together where you can access them quickly. Some people use a small pouch they wear around their neck so they are within easy reach. You will be expected to show identification and the boarding pass several times until you board the plane.

Utilize Self-Serve Kiosks

Many airlines have installed self-serve kiosks that allow you to print out boarding passes and checked luggage tags. Lines are often shorter at the self-serve counters and only require you to take your bags up to the baggage attendant to be weighed and have the luggage tags placed on the bags. Be prepared to show identification and the boarding pass. If self-service is not an option and you must wait in line, see if there is a frequently flyer privileges line, if you are a member of the airline’s program or use business/first class lines whenever you fly business/first class.

Breezing Through Security

Avoid wasting time on the wrong side of the security check point. You can purchase food, beverages, and snacks in most airports after getting through security, as well as use the bathroom. If you have followed the pre-arrival checklist, getting through security will be a breeze. Some airports offer frequent flyers the option to pay a fee ahead of time online and use express screening lanes.

As you are waiting your turn in line, remove shoes, take out laptops and liquids and be ready to place your items into the plastic bins. In addition, jackets, scarves, boots, belts, and some jewelry have to be taken off and put into a bin. Aren’t you glad you already packed jewelry and belts in your carry-on? Anything you would normally put in your pocket, other than your identification and boarding pass, put in your purse or backpack. Not only does this help keep the line moving faster, it prevents others from line jumping around you because you were not prepared.

Once You Land at Your Destination

If you traveled with only carry-ons you can skip waiting around for checked bags. If not, utilize the time waiting for your luggage to make getting out of the airport faster, like picking up the keys to your rental car. Hopefully, you pre-booked the rental car ahead of time so you can expedite the process. If you are transferring to public transport, look for kiosks or vendors selling tickets so you can simply get on and swipe you ticket and not waste time looking for exact change.

Depending upon your destination, it is recommended to pre-book your accommodations in advance before departing home, especially if you are arriving in the late afternoon or evening. Having a guaranteed reservation at a hotel, resort, or extended stay suite avoids wasting time going from one place to the next, standing in lines, and discovering there are no vacancies.

If this is your first time in Toronto, it may be somewhat overwhelming to navigate such a large city. Tall buildings, crowds of people, and an overall bustling downtown core - it’s a lot to take in! We provide you with tips to easily travel around the city so you may enjoy all it has to offer during your next extended stay:

TTC Subway

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway line is an efficient way to get around. Quick arrival times make it a convenient option for those on the go. Further, extended hours allow you to make use of the subway well into the evening. The TTC stretches in the north and south direction (Yonge - University - Spadina line) and also operates in the east and west direction. Subway fares are inexpensive and volume discounts are available if you purchase several tokens or a weekly/monthly pass. Taking the subway also gives you easy access to PATH, Toronto’s expansive downtown underground pedestrian walkway. It’s in the PATH that you’ll find a vast array of retail spots, services, and entertainment options. If you have difficulty navigating around, subway cars and stations contain a visual map to outline the routes. Visit TTC online for further information on the TTC and routes.

TTC Streetcars

TTC streetcars are noticeable by their red exterior and old-fashioned look. While riding a streetcar you will have the opportunity to take in scenic Toronto backdrops, like Little Italy or historic Old Town Toronto. The streetcars are particularly convenient if your stop is not near a subway line. If you need help finding your way around, you can chat with passengers or speak to the driver. Learn about the various routes here.

Seeing the City on Foot

No experience compares to seeing Toronto on foot. If you have some time to spare during the day, walking is a recommended way to get around. You’ll see the many of the neighbourhoods that make Toronto truly unique. Experience the diverse culture of Toronto and get the chance to network. It’s likely that you’ll pass by many landmark sites including the CN Tower. Walking around the city promotes daily exercise and is a good option with the warm weather approaching. If you need help with directions, it’s easy to strike up a conversation with locals.

Now you have details on ways to travel around in downtown Toronto! Don’t hesitate to contact the Mary-am Suites guest services team for further information on directions. Although spring is off to a slow start, the worst is over and we can begin looking forward to warmer temperatures. Toronto is an amazing city and with the warmer weather fast approaching, we recommend visiting the following Toronto locations to relax, play, and enjoy!

Take a Stroll Through High Park

High Park attracts many admirers in the spring with its beautiful Sakura cherry trees and cherry blossoms. The cherry blossoms typically bloom in late April or early May and last for approximately a week. If you happen to miss the cherry blossoms, High Park offers many other attractions, including: a Chinese garden, zoo (free admission), playground, waterfront, and off-leash dog park. Visit the High Park website for more information and updates on the cherry blossoms.

Sunbathe and Shop at The Beaches

Sun, Surf, and Shopping. The Beaches is a popular neighbourhood on Toronto’s east side. At the heart of The Beaches community, you’ll find dozens of independent shops and boutiques offering a number of unique products. After you’ve had your fill of shopping, take a walk past the colourful, cottage-like houses toward the beach. Join in on a friendly volleyball game or pull out a beach blanket and watch the waves roll in. With a long stretch of uninterrupted sandy beaches and boardwalk, The Beaches is an attractive destination for anyone on a warm spring day.

Visit the Island

Toronto’s island getaway, Centre Island is only a short ferry ride from downtown Toronto. Island visitors can explore the many island trails by bike (rentals available) or by foot. For a unique perspective of the Toronto skyline, rent a kayak or canoe and see Toronto from the water. If you have children, bring them to the Centreville Amusement Park. Spend the day with the kids riding the Ferris wheel or playing miniature golf. With ample seating, firepits, and barbecues, Centre Island is the perfect spring picnic destination.

Head to the Waterfront

When the weather warms up, consider heading down to the beautiful waterfront. The waterfront plays host to a wide variety of recreational activities and events. If you’re feeling active, see a more natural side of Toronto by biking or walking part of the 1400 km Waterfront Trail that spans 68 communities and over 405 parks. If relaxation is what you desire, there are many quiet parks along the trail that offer the solitude you need to peacefully unwind. Children will enjoy the many playgrounds and beaches that surround the lake. A visit to the waterfront is ideal for a beautiful spring day.
